Island Drilling Singapore Pte Ltd (IDS) was established in Singapore in 2010 by Mr Andy Frazer. IDS works in a niche branch of Naval Architecture with the design, building of small geotechnical drilling rigs and the subsequent installation onto Multi Purpose Supply Vessels. IDS first used Autodesk AutoCAD LT around 2004.

Project goals

In 2014, IDS was awarded a large design contract and employed 2 more draughtsmen all using AutoCAD. At this point in time, the team took an interest in 3D works and bought Inventor LT to try this out. Very quickly, IDS realised this was the way forward and invested in 3 more licenses of Inventor Professional.

Solution

There was a sharp learning curve but IDS was very ably assisted with training courses and after sales support from our local Autodesk Solution Provider, I-VTECH SOLUTIONS PTE LTD. Being able to model complete vessel installations and allow clients to view their assets prior to production has given IDS an edge over competitors in the same field who continue to work in 2D. In the early days, the team struggled with collaboration but that has gotten easier with every new release.

Business outcome

IDS now welcomes the flexibility of subscription. Our industry has never really recovered from the oil price crash of 2014, and with the Autodesk subscription offer and short-term subscriptions available, this makes the investment cost effective.
