Skanska: Revolutionizing Sustainability in Office Buildings with Autodesk Solutions - Popp&Asociatii

Customer challenge

The Skanska Campus 6 ensemble consists of 4 Class A office buildings. The constructions were carried out in 3 stages: Campus 6.1 is the first building designed and completed, followed by Campus 6.2 and 6.3, and at this moment, Campus 6.4 is under construction.

Similar to Campus 6.1, the Campus 6.4 building has an irregular plan shape, with the structural elements positioned on two orthogonal axes at distances of 8.10 meters, rotated relative to each other at an angle of approximately 34 degrees. The structural framework is made of reinforced concrete, with a structural composition similar to the other 3 buildings in the complex. The entire infrastructure was built within a deep excavation, protected by a system of piles along the adjacent property boundary.

In accordance with P100-1:2013 and CR0-2012, the building falls into Class II of importance (buildings with above-ground height between 28 and 45 meters, capable of accommodating more than 300 people). The project was selected for presentation at Autodesk University 2022, held in New Orleans, as part of the 3D Rebar Stadiums and Multilevel Structures: A Practical Walk-Through session

Furthermore, given the large number of engineers and technicians involved, the ease of collaboration thanks to Autodesk programs was extremely helpful.

Project goals

The project aims to set new sustainability standards in office building construction, leveraging Autodesk Solutions. The overarching goal is to revolutionize the concept of sustainability in the industry. Their commitment is to:

  • Maximize sustainability by achieving or exceeding the highest environmental certifications.
  • Optimize efficiency and reduce costs through streamlined construction processes.
  • Embrace innovative design for energy efficiency and occupant comfort.
  • Promote seamless collaboration among stakeholders.
  • Strive for carbon-neutral buildings through advanced techniques.
  • Make data-driven decisions to enhance building performance.
  • Prioritize occupant well-being with healthy indoor environments.
  • Educate and raise awareness about sustainable practices.
  • Establish measurable sustainability metrics.
  • Create a positive community impact.

The project represents a bold declaration of their commitment to revolutionize sustainability in office buildings, enhancing eco-friendliness, cost-effectiveness, and occupant satisfaction.

The complexity of the project required the use of tools that allow the creation of a 3D model with a high degree of detail (LOD 300, 350, 400) in order to coordinate with the other specialties involved.

In addition, it is very useful that Autodesk programs allow, on the one hand, the import of files from other programs and, on the other hand, the export to IFC format so that they can be imported into specific calculation programs.

Solution

For this project, Popp & Asociatii team used Autodesk Revit applications with the extra functionality provided by Graitec PowerPack for Autodesk Revit, Autodesk BIM 360 and Autodesk Navisworks.

Autodesk Revit was the project's digital backbone, enabling a dynamic and collaborative approach to building information modeling (BIM). The software streamlined design, visualization, and collaboration among multiple teams, fostering real-time communication and decision-making. With Revit, they created a highly accurate 3D model of the office building, offering a comprehensive view of the structure's design and functionality. Its parametric modeling capabilities allowed for efficient adjustments, ensuring consistency throughout the project.

Autodesk BIM 360, part of Autodesk Construction Cloud, was a critical element of their approach. It enabled all project stakeholders to access information concurrently within the same digital work platform (Common Data Environment). This online connectivity was pivotal in optimizing the project. It ensured that all parties had real-time access to the same information, thus enhancing the decision-making process, reducing work durations, and yielding favorable results.

Autodesk Navisworks played a vital role in the design process. This user-friendly application was instrumental in detecting and resolving collisions. Its real-time visualization of potential overlaps between specialties was invaluable in a project where multiple Autodesk Revit specialists concurrently modeled the office building. This dynamic environment allowed for instant visibility of changes and additions by all involved parties.

The Skanska project, done by Popp&Asociatii with the utilization of Autodesk Solutions, has set its sights on a transformative array of business outcomes, with the ultimate aim of revolutionizing the landscape of office building construction.

At its core, the project aspires to redefine sustainability standards in the industry. By harnessing the power of Autodesk Solutions, the intention is to not merely meet but surpass the most stringent environmental certifications. The envisioned outcome is the creation of office buildings that stand as exemplars of eco-friendliness, energy efficiency, and sustainability, in alignment with global environmental objectives.

Furthermore, the project seeks to optimize efficiency and reduce operational costs. This translates into a substantial enhancement. Projects that operate with heightened efficiency tend to be completed more swiftly and economically.

One of the pivotal transformations revolves around the seamless connectivity offered by Autodesk Solutions, especially Autodesk BIM 360. By providing a shared digital workspace, this project ensures that all stakeholders have simultaneous access to critical information. This business outcome significantly enhances the decision-making process. With real-time data access, decisions can be made promptly and accurately, reducing project timelines and yielding more favorable results.

As an outcome, the project stands as a testament to how technology and collaboration can transform the construction industry. The innovative integration of Autodesk Solutions, together with the expertise of Popp & Asociatii, has positioned the Skanska building at the forefront of sustainability, efficiency, and collaboration in office building construction. These outcomes not only elevate project success but also underline the commitment to pioneering change in the industry.

Conclusion

Being a complex project, it was necessary to use some tools that allow the creation of a 3D model with a high degree of detail (LOD 300, 350, 400) and a good collaboration with the other specialties involved (architecture, installations). All this together led to good collaboration during the project and reduced working times. Another advantage was given by the possibility of coordinating the entire structural design team.

At its core, this project represents a resounding success in redefining sustainability standards. By leveraging Autodesk Solutions, the team has not just met but exceeded stringent environmental certifications, setting a new benchmark for eco-friendliness, energy efficiency, and sustainability. It serves as a beacon for the industry's alignment with global environmental goals.

Equally significant is the project's focus on optimizing efficiency and reducing operational costs. The tangible benefits are multifaceted. Swift, cost-effective projects are a win-win, positively impacting the company's bottom line and positioning it as an industry leader. The Skanska project, powered by innovative Autodesk Solutions and a collaborative spirit from Popp & Asociatii, has redefined sustainability and efficiency in office building construction, setting new industry standards.

Construction of the Supreme Audit Office Headquarters using Autodesk Software - PORR a.s.

The facility is multifunctional with a predominant administrative function. The building is divided into two wings labeled as H and G within a broader area. The wings are connected by an underground floor (1.PP) and a connecting "neck" at levels 4 to 6.Structurally, it is a load-bearing monolith, founded deeply (wing H) and partially on a slab (wing G). The substructure consists of a white tub and the construction pit was secured by anchored retaining walls. The building has a two-winged (H) or three-winged (G) combined load-bearing scheme. The superstructure consists of load-bearing perimeter walls complemented by internal columns, pillars with capitals, and slab beams. The unique feature is the connecting structure (the so-called "neck"), consisting of glued laminated timber trusses.

Sampol: Generating Clean Energy with Integrated Projects in the Cloud

Innovation and digitalization have been key in the business evolution of SAMPOL, a Spanish company that has been competitive for nine decades, able to adapt and anticipate technological advances and trends in applied engineering projects.Betting on an inclusive digitalization: the cloud and BIM platformsFrom the international expansion initiated in the 2000s, SAMPOL saw the need to transform its processes to take advantage of the benefits of the internet and specialized programs in the management of project documentation and communication.Through the adoption of the Cloud as a repository of information and documentation, it was possible to assume a management focused on quality and not on routine and unproductive activities, in addition to promoting business growth thanks to the integration of all international delegations and production plants under the same environment, where distances or time differences do not matter to stay connected in real time.To achieve this new approach, an implementation plan developed by the consulting and training company GRAITEC, Autodesk® Platinum Partner, was established, which included training on specific software, workflows and associated processes. Among the main areas are the implementation of a Common Data Environment, the standardization of documentation, compliance with ISO 19650 and the collection of data to evaluate the impact of implementation.
