Success Story

Construction of the Supreme Audit Office Headquarters using Autodesk Software - PORR a.s.

Construction of the Supreme Audit Office Headquarters using Autodesk Software - PORR a.s.

Customer challenge

The facility is multifunctional with a predominant administrative function. The building is divided into two wings labeled as H and G within a broader area. The wings are connected by an underground floor (1.PP) and a connecting "neck" at levels 4 to 6.

Structurally, it is a load-bearing monolith, founded deeply (wing H) and partially on a slab (wing G). The substructure consists of a white tub and the construction pit was secured by anchored retaining walls. The building has a two-winged (H) or three-winged (G) combined load-bearing scheme. The superstructure consists of load-bearing perimeter walls complemented by internal columns, pillars with capitals, and slab beams. The unique feature is the connecting structure (the so-called "neck"), consisting of glued laminated timber trusses.

Project goals

In addition to other documents, such as structured tender, conditions including construction standards, safety and operating schemes, or Life Cycle Cost (LCC) analysis, the tender conditions included a contractual standard for BIM – the BIM Protocol. It clearly specified rules for digital collaboration. The BIM Protocol included an Appendix for the Building Execution Plan (BEP) specification and an appendix related to the Common Data Environment (CDE).

The BEP specification included, among other things, the definition of Level of Information (LOI) requirements in the form of a table with defined parameters for each part of the model. Alongside information, the table prescribed a numerical Level of Development (LOD) for each part. In collaboration with the client, the LOD section was supplemented with Level of Geometry (LOG), providing graphic and textual descriptions of individual model parts. The LOG clarified how both parties understood the numerical definition of LOD and what they expected from the BIM model from the outset.

The use of the Design & Build method and providing the BIM model as part of the tender documentation allowed the client to fully leverage the experience and know-how of the PORR a.s. team, for example, by proposing HVAC optimizations.

Solution

The project "Construction of the Supreme Audit Office" utilized Autodesk Revit and Autodesk BIM 360 software. Autodesk Revit served as the fundamental software for creating project documentation and a BIM model meeting the client's requirements. The software streamlined the entire project work, from design to presenting the ongoing model realization, facilitating collaboration among a large team of designers and coordinating professions in real-time.

Collaboration made use of the Autodesk BIM 360 CDE – a platform with which PORR a.s. has extensive experience, capable of working directly with BIM models in addition to traditional document management. The BIM 360 Design module, enabling real-time collaboration among designers, was specifically employed in the design phase. All partial BIM models were stored on BIM 360, and designers worked on them in Revit directly from this CDE. This working method allowed the creation and maintenance of a construction model, referred to as the "digital twin," in sync with the actual construction project.

Business outcome

Through retrospective evaluation and comparison with other projects not designed using the BIM method, the following benefits were identified:

  • More efficient utilization of contractor personnel.
  • Cost and time savings on repairs.
  • Reduction in project completion time.
  • Ability to divide subcontracting into smaller delivery units.
  • Material savings due to the choice of optimal route lengths, grouping (e.g., cable trays, suspension systems).
  • Use of model coordinates for automatic site layout, high precision, time savings.
  • Potential use of robotic work.
  • Potential for prefabrication.

Conclusion

For all participants involved in this groundbreaking project, especially for all departments of the general contractor, PORR a.s., it can be stated that the undeniable advantages of digitization primarily include easier communication with both the investor and among various company departments (e.g., communication between the project department at the company's headquarters and on-site construction management), subcontractors, and all other involved parties. The establishment of a common data environment (CDE) ensures that all elements of the process are involved in the project from the initiation of work on project documentation to the completion of construction.

PROMA increases design management efficiency with Autodesk Construction Cloud

With over 25 years of expertise, PROMA is a leading design and construction company in the Slovak architectural and design landscape. In 2018, they established the VDC Studio (Virtual Design and Construction Studio) to spearhead digitalization efforts in construction, focusing on BIM (Building Information Modelling) and other cutting-edge technologies.PROMA encountered intricate challenges in fostering collaboration among its three branches, specifically in the intricate realm of central Autodesk Revit files. The imperative for seamless cooperation on sizable files, coupled with intermittent collaboration requirements involving specialized personnel dispersed across various branches, propelled the necessity for a comprehensive solution. The intricacies of managing substantial design data across multiple locations necessitated a robust strategy to ensure optimal efficiency and precision in their engineering workflows.

Sampol: Generating Clean Energy with Integrated Projects in the Cloud

Innovation and digitalization have been key in the business evolution of SAMPOL, a Spanish company that has been competitive for nine decades, able to adapt and anticipate technological advances and trends in applied engineering projects.Betting on an inclusive digitalization: the cloud and BIM platformsFrom the international expansion initiated in the 2000s, SAMPOL saw the need to transform its processes to take advantage of the benefits of the internet and specialized programs in the management of project documentation and communication.Through the adoption of the Cloud as a repository of information and documentation, it was possible to assume a management focused on quality and not on routine and unproductive activities, in addition to promoting business growth thanks to the integration of all international delegations and production plants under the same environment, where distances or time differences do not matter to stay connected in real time.To achieve this new approach, an implementation plan developed by the consulting and training company GRAITEC, Autodesk® Platinum Partner, was established, which included training on specific software, workflows and associated processes. Among the main areas are the implementation of a Common Data Environment, the standardization of documentation, compliance with ISO 19650 and the collection of data to evaluate the impact of implementation.
