KAAPPAAN is an action thriller film from 2019 in the Indian Tamil language. It was written and directed by K. V. Anand, co-written by Pattukkottai Prabakar, and produced by Lyca Productions. The Film was released in theatres on 20 September 2019 and emerged as a commercial success by grossing ₹100 crores at the box office. However, in the making, the film had presented Firefly Creative Studio with a challenge to capture and enliven the attack of a genetically altered locust swarm on village crops at a time when the farmers were preparing to reap the sow. Being centric to the action, it became vital for Firefly Creative Studio to capture the details of the insects in terms of looks, proportions and mechanics.

Study the gigantic locust swarms flight patterns, eating behaviour, and another level of details to heighten the attacking senses with realistic VFX.

The Firefly team studied the locust flight patterns and their eating behaviour while in gigantic swarms. To present mammoth swarms on the screen with varied volume and level of details while keeping the delusion of the reality intact presented its own unique challenges. To further heighten the sense of the enormity of the attack, their FX team tested and deployed in Autodesk Maya and coded their way into varied swarm flight simulations. Special attention was rendered to the volume and depth of the swarm to reflect the emotion in each shot. A much-constricted schedule and high focus on the nature of the details made Firefly's work indispensable to the movie.
